The Eselenkei Conservation Area
near Amboseli National Park in Kenya is a private game reserve
owned by a local Maasai community. The reserve was set up in
1997 in partnership with a Kenya not-for-profit organisation
called Porini Ecotourism and over the last few years the wildlife
has been moving back into the area as it is a safe haven where
the habitat is protected and reserved for wild animals. Having
been absent for twenty years, the elephants are now back!
For visitors who wish to stay in a small camp in the Conservation
Area to seethe wildlife at first hand, there are regular two
night safaris operated out of Nairobi by Gamewatchers Safaris.
Visitor numbers are restricted to a maximum of 8 daily and only
one vehicle is allowed within the reserve per day, to keep the
area as natural wilderness. For more details see the website
at www.porini.com
