BEST WAY DOWNTOWN:
Train
BASICS
Schiphol is located nine miles (15 km)
southwest of Amsterdam's city center. It is 36 miles (57 km) from The
Hague and 46 miles (73 km) from Rotterdam. An information desk in the
arrivals hall is open 24 hours.
Schiphol's Web site offers lots of
useful information, including:
TAXI
There is good taxi service from outside
the arrivals hall. The fare to central Amsterdam is about 65 guilders
($30) and the ride takes around 30 minutes. Fare to The Hague is
about 115 guilders ($55) and to Rotterdam about 180 guilders ($85).
Note: Traffic during morning and afternoon rush hours is intense and
best avoided.
TRAIN
Excellent service is available to
Amsterdam stations which offers connections to other cities in the
Netherlands. There is plenty of luggage space and the trains are
clean, comfortable and fast.
Trains leave the airport
station every 15 minutes from 6 A.M. to midnight, and every hour from
midnight to 6 A.M. The station is easy to find, just a short walk
from the arrivals hall: Follow the signs after exiting customs.
Travel time to central Amsterdam is about 20 minutes. Purchase
tickets before boarding. One-way fare is about 5.50 guilders
($2.60).
There is also direct train service to Amsterdam RAI
(the convention center) and to other cities such as The Hague,
Rotterdam and Vlissingen.
RENTAL CAR
All major rental car companies are represented in
Amsterdam, but you should not rent a car if you are going to central
Amsterdam. Parking is extremely difficult, and driving involves an
obstacle course of trams, canals, one-way streets and
cyclists.
